Zhejiang University Overtakes Harvard for First Time in Nature Index Rankings

Zhejiang University has unseated Harvard University from its decade-long position at the top of the Nature Index Research Leaders rankings. The 2026 results, published on June 12, mark the first time the Chinese institution has led the global list measuring high-quality research output.

The shift was driven by Zhejiang University’s prolific publication record in chemistry, materials science, and life sciences. Chinese institutions now command nine of the top ten positions in the rankings, a concentration that underscores the country’s rapidly expanding scientific footprint.

The Nature Index tracks contributions to a select group of prestigious academic journals, serving as a key barometer of institutional research strength. The reshuffling at the summit highlights how sustained investment in laboratory infrastructure and scientific talent is redrawing the global map of elite research production.
