China’s Green Exports to US Surge 346% in May as AI Boom and Iran War Reshape Demand

Chinese exports of green-energy and battery products to the United States accelerated sharply in May, with unassembled photovoltaic cell shipments surging 346% year-on-year to $39.96 million, according to customs data cited by the South China Morning Post. The explosive growth reflects a dual demand shock: a booming US artificial intelligence sector that requires massive new electricity capacity, and a global scramble for energy independence triggered by the ongoing Iran war.

The surge comes as China’s overall May exports to the US hit a five-year high, rising 35% year-on-year, according to CNBC. Analysts at Capital Economics noted that the Iran conflict has accelerated the global pivot toward renewables, with China positioned as the primary supplier of the solar panels, batteries, and grid components needed to replace disrupted oil flows. “The country is likely to be among the biggest winners of the global shift towards electrification and decarbonisation,” a market analyst told the South China Morning Post.

The AI sector’s insatiable energy appetite is a new and powerful driver, with US tech giants racing to build data centers that require round-the-clock clean power. Unassembled photovoltaic cells — a key input for US solar panel factories — saw the most dramatic spike, as American manufacturers rush to secure supply chains that bypass tariff barriers. CNN Business reported that the Iran war has fundamentally altered energy-security calculations worldwide, making Chinese green tech a strategic necessity rather than a cost-saving option.

Looking ahead, The Guardian reported that the American epoch of oil is collapsing, with analysts predicting that US renewable energy installations will need to triple by 2028 to meet AI-driven electricity demand — a trajectory that points to sustained, record-level Chinese green exports for the foreseeable future.
