The explosive growth, confirmed by customs data on Monday, was fueled almost single-handedly by the country’s semiconductor titans capitalizing on an unrelenting global appetite for AI hardware.
The outbound shipment value reached $61.99 billion in the June 1-20 period, according to the Korea Customs Service. The numbers obliterate typical growth metrics, driven by a structural shift in global tech supply chains. As hyperscale data centers and AI developers race to secure advanced memory chips, South Korean manufacturers—the world’s dominant suppliers of high-bandwidth memory (HBM)—are operating at full throttle to meet orders.
Chip exports specifically skyrocketed by 188.4 percent compared to the same period last year. This semiconductor super-cycle has not only boosted overall trade figures but is also pulling capital flows back into traditional industrial sectors. The scale of the semiconductor rally is so significant that it is reshaping domestic financial markets, with analysts noting a rotation of liquidity out of speculative assets and into manufacturing and export-driven equities.
By destination, exports to major partners showed broad-based strength. The data underscores that the AI investment wave is insulating South Korea’s trade-dependent economy from geopolitical headwinds, with tech exports acting as a powerful buffer.
